Nick Cutroneo, Owner/Director/Instructor
Known for being a “communicative player with natural musicality,” Nick Cutroneo is an up and coming classical guitarist of the new generation. As an active performer, Mr. Cutroneo has performed extensively throughout the United States and Italy. As a highly sought after chamber musician, Mr. Cutroneo is currently involved with the New England Guitar Quartet as well as a flute and guitar duo with flutist Noriyo Fukui. Previously, he toured extensively with the violin and guitar duo Tempo del Fuoco and performed regularly with Blackledge Music Inc and the Northeast New Music Collective. During his time at The Hartt School, Mr. Cutroneo was a member of the prestigious Performance 20/20 honors chamber music program.
Devoted to not only the standard repertoire, Mr. Cutroneo has premiered many new works for the classical guitar by Thomas Schuttenhelm, Frank Wallace, EMMY Award Winning Composer Sean Pallatroni, and a Guitar Concerto written and dedicated to him by Dan Lis. Mr. Cutroneo was featured in the Miami String Quartet Competition Winners’ Concert. He has also been named finalist in the Hartt School’s Paranov Concerto Competition and Semifinalist in the Boston GuitarFest Adult Competition.
Active in the community, Mr. Cutroneo performs regularly at assisted living facilities and public libraries providing an enjoyable and varied musical as well as educational experience. He also provides master classes and clinics to public school music programs. These classes are meant to further interest in the classical guitar to students who might not otherwise be exposed to the instrument.
While he primarily performs as a classical guitarist, Mr. Cutroneo is a highly skilled electric guitarist. Over the years, he has performed in the pit orchestras of: Little Shop of Horrors, Legally Blonde, The Wedding Singer, and Hairspray. In addition, Mr. Cutroneo performs regularly with the cover band Amplified.
As a high school senior, Mr. Cutroneo attended the Pre-College division at the Juilliard School of Music and studied with Antigoni Goni. He earned both his Masters and Bachelors in Classical Guitar Performance at the Hartt School of Music studying with Richard Provost. During his studies as a masters student, Mr. Cutroneo completed the Suzuki Pedagogy program studying with David Madsen and being trained in 8 of the 9 books in the Suzuki Guitar Method. He is the first person in the country to hold a masters degree in Classical Guitar Performance with an emphasis in Suzuki Guitar Pedagogy.
Mr. Cutroneo previously taught at the University of Connecticut's Community School of the Arts, MusicMakers Academy, the Suzuki Music School of Westport, Suffield Academy, and the Talent Education Suzuki School. A passionate teacher, Mr. Cutroneo has successfully guided students interested in pursuing music in college. His students have been accepted to New England Conservatory, Ithaca College, The Hartt School of Music, The Butler School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin, and The University of New Haven. In addition, Mr. Cutroneo has been a visiting artist at a number of high schools in Eastern Connecticut; at Guitar Day for Reading Fleming Intermediate School in Flemington, NJ; at Molloy College in Rockville Centre, NY; and The Volterra Project in Volterra, Italy.
Since 2004, Mr. Cutroneo has been teaching privately in the Greater Hartford Area of Connecticut. In 2008, he founded the Nick Cutroneo Guitar Studio serving the surrounding area as one of the area's leading guitar instructors. In addition, he currently serves as faculty at Central Connecticut State University and Manchester Community College.
